Various Departments:
a.) Deck department:
Captain, Chief Officers, Second officer, third officer-they get their duty in the deck department of the ship. The head of this section is called captain. First, second and third mate help the captain. Ship driving, sea-route instruction, maintenance of law and order and giving security to the passengers-these all works are done by them.
b.) Engine department:
The workers of this department or Marine engineers are in duty to maintain the machines of the ship. They are Marine engineers, second engineer, third engineer, fourth engineer and fifth engineer. Apart from these engineers there are radio officer and electrical officer. c.) Servicing department:
This department is responsible for living and catering services and passenger services. Chief Stuart, Stuart, Baker, etc. are workers of this section.
Educational Qualification:-
The minimum eligibility for courses in Nautical science and Marine engineering is 10+2 or an equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics. He should also pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no colour blindness.
Candidates wishing to enter the navigational and engineering fields of Merchant Navy need to complete a Bachelors degree in Nautical Science or Marine engineering, before they can gain admission to the field.
Job Prospects
Merchant Navy is the backbone of international trade, carrying cargo across the globe. Without the merchant navy, much of the import-export business would grind to a halt. Therefore trained personnel is required for various departments of the ship and this widens the scope for employment in this field.
They are offered jobs in the following major areas :
• By various shipping companies in the government and private sector.

Salary:-
The starting salary varies between Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 a month. A person gets a variety of benefits such as free food, accommodation, paid leave, two-way free passage and facilities for families. Foreign companies pay higher, and a starting salary of $ 1,500 to $ 2,500 can be expected.
