Life on board Ships : Ships move along the coast and across the oceans and carry different types of cargoes. Number of persons working on a ship depends upon its type, size and its trade. The number of persons can range between 6-30 and greater number on passenger ships. It is important for each person to be able to work independently as well as in a small team. Physical health, agility, good habit, and discipline are very important qualities required of a seafarer. One needs to be willing to work with hands, in different conditions, be safety conscious, and be able to stay away from home and friends for few months at a time.

COURSE CONTENT: The course is conducted over 3 stages as follows:
STAGE 1: Pre Sea Program (PSP) 6 - months Pre sea training will be conducting. Upon completion trainees will be awarded the Pre-sea Certificate.

STAGE 2: On-board Structured Shipboard Training Program (SSTP) 18 - Months Sea with DLP going training on board merchant ships. A Distance Learning Program (DLP) will have to be completed by all the trainees during this stage.

STAGE 3: On completion of on-board training, this program provides all the necessary training required by STCW 95 and in order to be eligible for 2nd Mate Limited COC Exam - Written & Oral examination as a Deck Watch keeper (STCW 95 table A-II/1). During training and assessment the emphasis is on the Cadet demonstrating the range of knowledge and skills associated with the job of a Deck Watch keeper.

Eligibility: 12th Pass with any stream with minimum aggregate 40% marks overall and 50% marks in English either in 10th or 12th class or Diploma. / Any Diploma holders with aggregate 50% in final year.
Age - 17.5 to 25 year
Medical Fitness: Medically fit eyesight 6/6 without external aids. No color blindness.
Selection Procedure: Candidate will undergo an aptitude and written tests followed by an interview. The final selection will only takes place after medical check-up through our panel Doctor.
Fee Structure: Total Course Fees - Rs 5.50 Lacs

Since time immemorial, ships at sea have beckoned the brave and adventurous. The attraction of riches in this profession has been subject of many a folklore. Even today, the situation remains more or less the same, except that today the ships are far more safer than they were in the times of Vasco-da-Gamma and Columbus. Today, there is hardly any career which can fetch such high salaries at such a young age that the Merchant Navy offers. Unfortunately, the knowledge on the subject of "What is Merchant Navy & How do i join it ?" still remains the privilege of very few people who already have relatives and friends in this industry. With this in background, in this section we wish to tell you all about career in Merchant Navy.  The ships today are highly sophisticated and technology intensive. Safety and efficiency of the ship are crucial and depends upon the professional ability, competence and dedication to duty, of a seafarer, on board ship. Naturally, a seafarer is expected to be highly professional for the safe and efficient operation of the ship. The training in India is of exceptionally high standards and the Indian seafarers are one of the most sought after commodity in the shipping industry worldwide.  Needless to say that an Indian seafarer demands and does gets highly paid.

WHAT ARE THE PAY AND PERKS ?

The pay and perks depend upon the type of the ship, experience and competency of an individual. At the starting level, a rating may get 700 - 1000 US $. Among officers a 3rd Officer/4th Engineer gets about 1500 - 2000 US $, 2nd Officer / 3rd Engineer - 2200 - 2500 US $, Chief Officer/2nd Engineer - 3000 - 3500 US $ and a Chief Engineer / Master - 4000 - 5000 US $. An individual can attain the rank of 3rd officer at the age of approx. 23 yrs and Master by the age of about 35 yrs.

 WHAT ARE THE VARIOUS JOBS?

(a)    Deck Officer - The officers from this branch primarily look after the ships navigation, loading/unloading of cargo and the general maintenance and administration of the ship. The officer joins in the rank of 3rd officer and is subsequently promoted to the rank of 2nd officer, Chief Officer and finally the Master of the ship. Off course, the promotions are subject to the individual passing his competency exams and his performance onboard the ship. In addition to navigation duties, normally  a 3rd officer looks after the life saving appliances, 2nd officer the passage planning and the navigation equipment, the Chief Officer looks after the cargo work and the Master is the overall in-charge of the ship.

(b)    Engineering Officer - These are the officer who are qualified in Marine Engineering. They join as 4th Engineer and step by step, get promoted to 3rd, 2nd and Chief Engineer, subject to their passing the competency exams and performance onboard the ship. The Engineering department in addition to looking after the main engines, are also responsible for associated equipment like power generation equipment, cargo pumps and air - conditioning etc. The4the Engineer  is responsible for operation and maintenance of engine room auxiliaries. The 3rd engineer for fuel, water and the boiler room equipment. The 2nd engineer for lubricating the system, engine room auxiliaries, and electric equipment. In addition, there is an electrical officer, who is responsible for the electrical equipment.

(c)    Radio Officers - The Radio Officers looks after all the electronic communication and the related records. In addition, he also looks after electronic navigation aids such as radar, depth measuring devices, long range navigation equipment and global positioning system etc. However, this category of personnel has been almost phased out and their duties passed over to other deck officers. To be qualified as Radio Officer an individual need to do a two week GMDSS course.

(e)    Purser - He is an officer who looks after all the administrative work related to pay and perks of personnel onboard. However, this category of personnel has also been almost phased out and their duties passed over to other deck officers.

(f)    Ratings  - There are three kinds of ratings - deck, engine room and catering. Deck rating is responsible for cargo handling, mooring/ unmooring and general maintenance of the ship. Similarly the engine room ratings assist the engineering officers in maintenance and operation of engines and associated equipment.   The catering crew consists of Steward / Cooks and as the name suggests, they look after the catering and the house keeping of officers cabin.

The  minimum duration of the courses from any one of the above institutes shall be  two years.
 
For Purser/Ship’s clerk A graduate with knowledge of accountancy and computer operation.

Courses : Career in Merchant Navy can be pursued either as an officer or a rating in mainly two specialized fields, i.e. Marine Engineering and Nautical (deck). To become a seafarer, following streams of entries (Pre-Sea courses) are available to Indian citizens in the Government as well as in private training institutions (recognized and approved by Director General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping):-

The Merchant Navy is a non-combatant commercial fleet, which deals with transporting cargo and passengers by sea. Its fleet is therefore composed of passenger vessels, cargo, liner tankers, carriers, as well as other special types of vehicles. Merchant navy is a career full of adventure and long voyages to different beautiful places. In spite of a lot of hard work and long absence from home, the Merchant navy professionals earn a high tax free salary, with other numerous benefits and promising promotional opportunities. This makes merchant navy a lucrative and exciting career.

The main positions open in the merchant navy are for marine engineers, navigating officers and radio officers. In a field which was hitherto purely for men, there is some positive change visible now, with many women joining merchant navy as ship doctors and radio officers.

The employment on board a ship is divided into three different streams. Deck officers, Engineers and Ratings. Deck officers are headed by the Captain of the ship. Deck officers are responsible for navigation, safe and efficient movement of the ship and transportation of cargo. To navigate the ship they use a range of satellite, radar systems and equipments and communication systems. Checking weather and navigation reports is very important; it helps in taking appropriate action. Deck officers monitor the loading, storage and unloading of cargo and the maintenance of deck machinery. They also take care of the safety, firefighting and life-saving equipment in terms of any emergency. They also maintain the legal and operational records.

The Engineering department looks after the main engine, which is gigantic and complicated. They are also responsible for the operation of mechanical and electrical equipment on board, managing power, fueling and distribution systems, repairing and upgrading systems and equipments and implementing regular equipment inspections and maintenance programmes. Engineers also need to be updated with new developments in the marine engineering field.

Ratings has three categories. Deck rating is responsible for handling cargo, mooring / unmooring and general maintenance. Engine ratings who help the engineering officers in maintenance of engine and other equipments. Saloon (catering) consists of steward / cooks, they look after the housekeeping and catering.

This department is responsible for living and catering services and passenger services. Chief Stuart, Stuart, Baker, etc. are workers of this section.


Educational Qualification:-

The minimum eligibility for courses in Nautical science and Marine engineering is 10+2 or an equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics. He should also pass a medical fitness test for sea service under standard norms and with eyesight 6/6 with no colour blindness.
Candidates wishing to enter the navigational and engineering fields of Merchant Navy need to complete a Bachelors degree in Nautical Science or Marine engineering, before they can gain admission to the field.

Job Prospects
Merchant Navy is the backbone of international trade, carrying cargo across the globe. Without the merchant navy, much of the import-export business would grind to a halt. Therefore trained personnel is required for various departments of the ship and this widens the scope for employment in this field.

They are offered jobs in the following major areas :

 •  Foreign shipping companies also offer good job prospects.



Salary:-

The starting salary varies between Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 a month. A person gets a variety of benefits such as free food, accommodation, paid leave, two-way free passage and facilities for families. In other words, the salary can be saved totally while one is on ship. The perquisites include bonus, holiday travel and other annual benefits. Foreign companies pay higher, and a starting salary of $ 1,500 to $ 2,500 can be expected.
